NEW Grant Programme for Japanese Studies Projects

This new grant programme provides grants to universities and research institutions that are implementing Japanese Studies activities.

Projects that can be sponsored by this programme include:

  1. Research or conferences on Japan; study or training in Japan or publications that promote or develop Japanese studies overseas
  2. Inviting scholars or researchers from Japan or other countries to deliver lectures on Japan
  3. Purchase and shipping of books and materials on Japanese studies
  4. Promotion of Japanese studies and interests.

The average grant amount for FY 2017 is expected to be between JPY 500,000 and JPY 1,000,000

Projects should be implemented and completed between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018.

Japanese Studies Fellowship Programme

This programme provides support to outstanding scholars and doctoral candidates who wish to conduct research in Japan in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences. The grant covers a round trip airfare to Japan, a stipend to cover living expenses and other allowances.

Research trips for this year’s programme should commence between 20 May 2017 and 15 March 2018.

Grant Programme for Intellectual Exchange Conferences:

This grant provides support to universities, research institutes and other non-profit making organisations wishing to carry out collaborative intellectual projects such as international conferences, seminars and workshops. The theme of the project must address common challenges that concern Japan and other countries (e.g. ageing population and decreasing birth rate, environment and  energy, influence of science and technology on society, etc.), and participants from Japan must play a significant role in the dialogue

Projects should be implemented and completed between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018.

Japan Foundation London Grant Programme for Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange

This programme is designed to provide grant assistance to projects (e.g. lectures, workshops, conferences) in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences that have a significant Japan element, or involve collaboration with Japanese researchers/practitioners taking place in the UK.

Priority will be given to projects that fall under one or more of the following descriptions:

  1. Projects that will bring together researchers/ practitioners from a variety of disciplines and sectors that are relevant to Japan
  2. Projects organised by, and/or involving core participation by, early career researchers/ practitioners
  3. Projects that will nurture diverse interests in Japan among future generations in the UK

Successful applicants may be granted up to £3000

No application deadline, but applications must reach our office at least 2 months before the start of the project.
